El ambiente y los recursos naturales no tienen precio en el mercado, pero sí tienen valor. Resulta
necesario estimar ese valor económico para calcular el costo que implica su deterioro, en el caso del
ambiente, o su extinción, en el caso de un recurso natural vivo. La actividad ovina en Patagonia sufre desde
hace años una caída de las existencias y de la rentabilidad de las explotaciones, debida en parte al proceso
creciente de desertificación. Para frenar este proceso, entre otras acciones, se investiga el desarrollo de
alternativas productivas como el manejo de la fauna silvestre. Mediante el análisis costo beneficio de la acti
vidad ovina tradicional, el manejo ovino sustentable y el manejo extensivo del guanaco se hace una pro
puesta de valoración económica del ambiente, comparando los resultados de cada alternativa. Se concluye
que el valor del guanaco para la sociedad, ascendería aproximadamente a $ 100.000.000 y la conservación
del recurso forrajero representa un aumento en el valor de la tierra de 13,07 $/ha. -
The environment and the natural resources do not have market price, however they do have value.
It is necessary to estimate this economic value in order to calculate the cost of its deterioration, in the
case of the environment, or its extinction, in the case o f an alive natural resource. For years, sheep
production in Patagonia have been loosing stocks and profitability owed partly to the increasing
process of desertification that suffers the region. To stop this process, among other actions, it is
investigated the development o f productive alternatives, like the handling of wild species. Using cost
benefit analysis o f traditional sheep production, sustainable sheep production and extensive gump
production, this work makes a proposal of an economic valuation of the environment, comparing the
results of each alternative. The conclusions are that the value of the gump for the society would be
around $ 100.000.000 and that forage source conservation represents an increment o f 13,07 $/ha in
the land value
