Dr. Carlos J. Pérez-Alemán (Nicaragua) has taken on several challenges in his professional career. From an agronomy degree on to a specialization in Integrated Pest Management, then to Sustainable Agriculture in the Hillsides of Central America, making a deeper stop on the practical elements for implementation of payment for ecosystem services, and up to a major challenge worldwide: mitigation and adaptation to climate change. In the same way the subjects undertaken have been challenging and diverse, thus has been the experience with a wide array of institutions. From higher education, Zamorano, CNEARC, Cornell University, and CATIE, to highly competent international organizations. The private sector has also contributed to building his portfolio of experiences. Through NICA FORESTAL S.A., he has had the opportunity to develop a forest plantation with European investors. The latter, has taken the path for FSC and Gold Standard certification. One of the major achievements is the contribution to elaborating the Regional Strategy on Climate Change, which was approved by ministers of CCAD/SICA in Cancún, Mexico, during COP16.
