Resumen

  • The regulation of gene editing in the Americas has evolved rapidly in response to the development of new biotechnological tools applied to agriculture, animal health, and genetic improvement. Here, regional regulatory trends are analyzed, highlighting the differentiation between traditional transgenic organisms and products obtained through gene editing without stable incorporation of exogenous DNA. The review shows that many Latin American countries are adopting science-based approaches grounded in risk analysis and case-by-case assessment, using the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety as a key reference. It also examines the strategic role of international cooperation promoted by IICA in strengthening regulatory capacities, harmonizing concepts, and developing national regulatory frameworks adapted to emerging technologies. In addition, it addresses challenges related to institutional diversity, overlapping regulatory mandates, and the need for continuous regulatory updates. Finally, recent regulatory advances in gene-edited plants, animals, and microorganisms are presented, evidencing a regional trend toward more transparent, predictable, and innovation-friendly biosafety regulatory systems.
