Traceability as a support for the quinoa production model through ICTs in the department of Cauca, Colombia Article uri icon

Resumen

  • Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd) and its agroindustrial derivatives face an increasingly advanced and interconnected supply chain, where traceability has become a crucial practice to optimize unit operations and logistics in the production and preparation processes that accompany it. There is a recent interest in this crop in Colombia with a growing demand in the production of various food products derived from this plant species. However, there is a low use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) solutions for the management of the value chain, which limits the cultivation potential in the country. The objective of the project was the development of a technological solution to monitor quinoa production inventories in four municipalities in the Department of Cauca, using a mobile application in real situations in nursery, field, and conditioning areas. The project’s methodology is centered on a participatory research proposal to understand the practices in the production line of the inventories generated, and the ICT-based spiral model was applied to establish the relationship between identity and architecture in the production environment of the technological solution. As a result, the mobile application “Quinuapp” was developed, designed to operate without internet connection (offline). This application allows for the identification, following, and tracking of production inventories throughout the quinoa supply chain. In addition, the custom design of the tool was progressively adapted to the specific characteristics of each municipality where the development was implemented.
